Today I am discussing a subject related to tourism. Tourism is a very big industry today in the entire world. There are some small countries having beautiful landscape, rivers, hills etc. where the biggest source of earning is related to tourism.
For tourists the whole country becomes a host, to serve them and earn good money in return, but the basic thing is that we should not become too greedy. It is the natural beauty of Kashmir because of which it is called ‘heaven on the earth’. And this is the reason why Pakistan which is a failed country otherwise, where the elected (?) representatives are always in the grip of military bosses and ISI, they are so desperate to grab Kashmir from India, thinking that it might help them survive as a nation.
I have lived in cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and presently in Goa, which are big tourist destinations. I remember about Jaipur, long back when I was living there I found that many houses in our neighborhood had been converted into hotels. In Goa also there are many people whose earnings are through houses either given to hotels or they are themselves operating them as guest houses.
In Goa since there are very less tourists during rainy season, the income of taxi operators is seasonal, this might be a reason that they never allowed App based taxi services like Ola , Uber to operate there and they charge almost double of the taxi fare charged at other places.
When tourists arrive at any place everybody in the market, who provides any type of facilities or services, get benefited. In any season if tourists do not arrive it is a great loss to government as well as the people connected with this activity.
I have not yet gone to Kashmir but I remember what my son told me after coming from there, there those who provide horse-riding services, they are poor people and solely depend on the earnings from tourists. They gather outside the hotels and when any tourist comes out several of them rush to catch the customer, they urge them to take a ride, say they are hungry and all that. Those opposing tourism, the separatists etc. had spoiled there life, I hope now slowly they would get benefited, since their earnings totally depend on tourists.
So no doubt that tourism is a big booster for the economy, but here we are discussing the bad effects of ‘over tourism’, yes it could be a big problem. We need to earn more but not at the cost of well being of our people. Some people connected with tourism might be getting the benefits from more and more rush of tourists but if it effects the environment or otherwise makes a negative impact on the quality of life there, it must be taken care of.
For reducing the negative impacts of over-tourism I think the facilities for stay of tourists can be spread in more area so that the density of population gets reduced. There could also be some mechanism to manage the rush for which tourists may be motivated to visit more in the periods when they visit less, so that it becomes less in peak season. Some facilities could be developed to make their stay in off-season more comfortable and cheaper.
Laws to maintain cleanliness and good environment, should be applied more strictly, those people who do such activities which harm the environment should get punished. No doubt tourism can become the backbone of any economy but this is not desirable at the cost of harming the environment and our social well being.
I think a more dependable and less polluting transport system, metro trains wherever possible can add to reduction of pollution by so many taxis and it would help the tourists also.
I do not know much about the factors badly affecting the environment or the social life but the local administration can properly assess them and make a proper plan to reduce the bad effects of more rush of tourists at any given time.
I talked about tourist destinations in India but at present I am in London, so I would put pics of London here.
This is my humble submission on the #IndiSpire prompt –
Over-tourism has led to social and environmental problems. What do you think is a good solution… #Tourism
