Greatness of History or culture!

A question has been raised, rather a suggestion has been given that Indians should not feel proud of their history and let their past go!

Yes, I personally feel that there is nothing great in our history as a nation, history is otherwise more recent, though it is past, that we remember.

The English people may boast of having a great history, since they ruled over a major part of the world. By whatever way they acquired the reigns of a great country like India is another matter, but they could claim that the ‘Sun never set in their Kingdom’.

As far Indians are concerned, we have been ruled by foreign powers, first the Moghuls and then the British for a very long time. The reason being that we had many small kingdoms and these kings kept fighting amongst themselves. The concept of undivided India, which was developed during the period of Ashoka was lost totally.

There might be some heroes who fought the foreign rule and they can surely be considered great heroes in some parts of the country for their courage, while other kings were bowing down. But I don’t think we find anything to be proud about our recent history, as a nation.

There was a very nice movie also ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’ based on a short story written by Munshi Prem Chand Ji. In this movie two friends who considered themselves to be Royal Blood, since their ancestors ruled some states, kept boasting about their bravery and playing the game of chess (Shatranj), while the British forces came and acquired the area, which they claimed to be theirs!

So, what we Indians are proud about is our culture, our values, we might not be following them fully but our culture, our scriptures have taught values which whole world has admired and has been accepted by many countries in some form or other.

Great philosophers like Max Mueller studied our scriptures and wrote a lot about them, there are many foreign dignitaries Like Father Kamil Bulke who earned fame by studying and writing about Ram Charit Manas by Tulsi Das ji.

I would like to submit that, we might have remained divided due to the ambitions of those ruling small kingdoms, we do not have much to feel proud about in our general history, we are performing very nicely as a great democracy and we would always remain proud, for our culture. I feel that Late Sardar Patel Ji makes us more proud than many small kings, since he made these kingdoms become integral part of our independent India.

We often keep remembering our values and we must, like the great film maker Raj Kapur expressed in a film song of ‘Jis Desh Me Ganga Bahti Hai’-

Mehmaan jo hamaaraa hota hai, wo jaan se payara hota hai,
Jyaada ka nahi laalach hamko, thode me gujaaraa hota hai.
Bachchon ke liye jo dharti maa, sadiyon se sabhi kuch sahti hai,
Ham us Desh ke waasi hai, jis desh me Ganga bahti hai.

So, I just want to submit that there may not be much in our recent history, and rightly it is not a good thing to be proud about history but we are and would always remain proud of our culture, our values and keep spreading them.

This is my humble submission on the IndiSpire prompt- Clinging to history and its supposed greatness is as foolish as maintaining that your bum has calluses because your great grandfather rode on an elephant. Real greatness lies in dealing successfully with the present. India should let the past go. #GrappleWithPresent

Justice the Princess!

We are living in the greatest democracy in the world, though we might be having some great minds who never find anything positive with our Country. Yes, there are some discrepancies associated with any system or arrangement.

One big thing which all modern societies claim is that all are equal before law. Yes, very true, even in the British ruled India also there were courts, which pronounced death sentences to the freedom fighters. Even in the dictatorial Pakistan there are courts, I am not sure how far these courts can function freely, however everything has a perspective, and the justice system there can be seen in the given background of the government run by the military and also the religious Maulanas controlling the society to great extent.

Anyway, whatever be the background conditions, the courts all over the world, try to deliver justice, based on the evidence put before them. The goddess of justice is considered to be blind and she judges right or wrong, based on the weight of the evidence put in the weighing balance in her hands by both sides.

Regarding judicial system, I remember the stories we heard from our elders in our childhood. The stories might now have changed to some extent, but in our childhood the stories mostly focused on kings and princes. We often heard in the stories that the prince had to go long distance, beyond some mountains etc. to meet the princess, to get her released from prison or to bring something strange to please her. This is something that only the prince could do, since he had the best horses and required support, which any ordinary person can’t have. Success stories were thus meant for the princes of the past and are for the rich and powerful of present only.

Yes, justice system is transparent, but it is not aloof from corruption. Further you have to present the facts, sorry not facts but evidence, and often evidence is not something which a common person can gather and get presented properly before the very costly judicial system.

Just consider if it becomes a reality that whoever does wrong gets punished and the one who is right would get justice and honor. Then why would the lawyers and advocates get such high fees. They do not get paid much by those who are fighting for justice. In fact, these are the criminals, looters, mafias who pay them the most. Such people who earn a lot through unlawful activities and commit heinous crimes, they tell them that they would pay them anything they ask but they should win the case.

So ultimately, it is the evidence that matters. And evidence that stands the test of the judicial system, and in the process sometimes the witnesses have to run away, change their stand or even die, but the rich and powerful have to win the case.

So, it is true that the courts deliver the judgements based on evidence put before them, and a poor person is often not in a position to make his voice heard properly, to present the evidences before the court. And ultimately it is the money power and muscle power which wins. The scene is changing to some extent but not as fast as it should. For making the judicial system much more effective, the lawyers would have to become missionaries and not those running after big money and being ready to kill the judicial system because of their greed. Would the things change much fast? We can just hope so.

This is my humble submission on the #IndiSpire prompt- “Everybody is equal in the eyes of law, without any discrimination”, goes the saying but in reality, if the accused is/are rich and influential, don’t they eventually get acquitted? Why is our Justice system skewed against a common citizen? #UnfairJusticeSystem

That stone, broke everything!

This is the story of Ravi, which I would write, as if he is writing it.

Today is going to be a day full of activities. Election results are to be announced today. My Netaji, who is my mentor, I have been living at his bungalow, the MLA residence, here in the capital city of the state, for over 10 years now.

Netaji is from my village and have been MLA for 3 terms now, he is considered to be quite senior and respectable leader in the state, whether his party is in power or not.

I remember the day almost 10 years back when I had done my graduation and Netaji was at his home in our village, where he kept visiting since his family lived there only and it was his constituency. Netaji personally knew my family, like so many other families in his village and also his constituency.

I had scored good marks in my graduation exams and my father took me to the Netaji residence to get his blessings on my becoming a graduate. Netaji had been a witness to my academic record, I also received awards in my school from him.

My father informed Netaji about my result, I touched his feet to get his blessings and while my father expressed his worries regarding my future, Netaji proposed that I can live at his MLA residence, attend to his works as his Personal Secretary and the salary he offered was nice, such that I could not think of  at that time, while I had mostly been confined to my village.

It is since then that I have been living at the official residence of Netaji, looking after his requirements, making his travel and stay arrangements whenever he visited somewhere. It was mostly during the sessions of the assembly only that Netaji lived there otherwise it was I only who lived at the bungalow all the time.

I do not carry very good image about political persons, now that I have lived over 10 years in the capital city, but I still feel that Netaji who is considered among the old guard in politics, still carries some values and has got a good image among the people.

Netaji have been winning elections almost in one-sided way, it was considered that there is nobody in his constituency who could give him a good fight. But it was not so this time. A young person from the opposition had served the local people in many ways before being declared the candidate against him. He put many proposals before the people regarding development and progress in the area and it was considered to be a tough fight this time.

In the meanwhile, politics have become quite dirty, there are fights among the supporters of various candidates and use of undignified language also by some people. Anyway, this time it was being felt that Netaji might lose the elections for the first time in his career. An incident which happened during the campaign actually changed the situation. Netaji had gone to campaign in his area when some person in the crowd threw a stone on him, he was hit in the forehead, was hospitalized and had to skip campaign for 2-3 days and this incident created a great sympathy wave among his electorate, who had been electing him term after term till now.

Anyway, it was almost a month back and by now elections were over and results were to be announced today. Many people would be visiting today and I have to make necessary arrangements for the guests, who are all sure about the victory of Netaji.

An incident happened last night however which have changed the image of my well-wisher and employer Netaji. He has been quite concerned about his image. He sometimes drinks but alone only, may be in my presence. But yesterday some of his friends and campaign in-charges had come they enjoyed drinks and also requested him to join and being thankful to them for their efforts, he also joined them.

He took whiskey in limits only however while they were discussing about elections somebody said ‘that very incident changed the situation completely’, on that Netaji suddenly said, ‘Your people should have acted more wisely. It hit me so hard that for a while I felt whether I would survive or not!’. The person replied, “ For reaping such benefits, this much is necessary, thank God it would get you elected this time.”
On listening all that I felt that I would suddenly fall down, it was such a sudden and big blow for me. It was too late to do anything when I found out who was behind it.

This is my humble submission on the #IndiSpire prompt-Write a short story that starts or ends with-  “It was too late to do anything when I found out who was behind it.” #shortstory

A small thing- love for our country!

Talking about small things in life, which hold great importance! What is small or big depends on the thinking of a person and others may consider it small or big based on their thinking or may be values.

We often try to do things in life which are proper as per our principals, thinking etc. For example ‘faith’ is a matter of faith. We might believe in many things as per our upbringing mostly. For example some people believe in God, some don’t. Loving our country also depends upon us, our personal and family values mostly. For any other person it does not make much difference whether we love our country or not.

Today I take this one thing, which mostly Indians consider very pious is loving our country. Our faith in our culture makes us strong. This is something which the English politician and historian – Lord Macaulay felt that Indian have very strong faith in their motherland and their culture and he felt that this strong faith needs to be erased from the hearts of new people through the education system.

Yes it might appear a small thing, but people like me in the years of their upbringing came across shlokas and poems which give a great teaching and also Samskaara. Like while we say- ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam’ (The whole world is like a family). But we also say- ‘Janani janmabhoomishch swargadapi gariyasi’ (Mother and motherland are more pious than heaven). We have grown listening, to poetic lines, songs etc. explaining the great traditions of our great country and our culture. This is true with most people of my generation.

But now we find that some over educated people of present time. They are in the field of journalism, politics etc. they feel that country is just a geographical boundary. They don’t believe in any great thing associated with our history, civilization or culture. They might rather have chosen to be born in some other country if they had a choice. Such people are also decorated with some national and international awards.

I just want to assert that the love for our country, our culture are very valuable for people like me. But these are not things that should make anybody arrogant and make him consider others to be inferior in anyway. Further one must study in this field and not just have false pride.

I just felt that this is something which many modern people consider to be small but it is in my view very pious which connects us to our roots.

This is my humble submission on the #IndiSpire prompt- Little things can make a lot of difference in life. How do you appreciate little things in life? #lifemotivation
